With the completion of the Airbnb Brooklyn Half Marathon last weekend, it appears that the Spring Racing season has ended and Hot Weather running has arrived.

We hope you are enjoying a short respite and enjoying some grilling and sunshine as you trade in your merino long sleeves for dri-fit tank tops and your capris for your short-shorts. Keep on those runners though, because our summer is shaping up to be an active one you wont want to miss out on!

  • Ready, Set… Go #CHRC!

On Sunday, March 6, more than 5000 runners participated in one of NYRR’s favorites, the Salsa, Blues and Shamrock 5K in Washington Heights!

    Racing

Among them were the lucky 13 #CHRCMen and #CHRCWomen accompanied by one special Leprechaun cheering on the sidelines at the finish. Members of the team had been preparing for this hilly race through the month of February and others used this as a training race for their bigger events of the 2016 spring racing season.

With five male finishers, this was a debut finish for the #CHRCMen’s team – meaning that the team had enough people to pool their results and get scored for club points! Congratulations to our men’s team!!

This is #CHRCWomen’s second year in the Club Standings and it’s certainly a strong start! The ladies ran with smiles for miles to bring in four points and a 6th place standing for Open Women B (20th overall). Now that’s a smashing start to the 2016 season!!

    Post-race BreakfastCHRC

Big thanks to our Lucky Leprechaun (aka Akil) who cheered our 200m finish! We celebrated with a Dominican breakfast at Malecon. It was a CHRC kind of morning.

    NEXT UP…

Our second Club Points race is this Saturday April 2nd at the Scotland 10K in Central Park! Both #CHRCWomen and #CHRCMen have full teams toeing the start line. Bring a sprig of heather and blare the bagpipes! These runners are ready for some fun! Here’s tae ye! Here’s tae us!

Join us afterward for some tattie scones and a party to celebrate at Berg’n in Crown Heights! All are welcome.

  • New York Marathon Events at MCNY

Make the City Your Gym February 22 at 6:30 pm

New York may be well known for its expansive parks, pedestrian lifestyle, and greenmarkets, but many residents also cope with food deserts, prohibitively expensive gym memberships, and limited access to well-maintained green space – as well as to quality healthcare. How can New York offer world-class health and wellness opportunities for all its citizens, not just the wealthiest? Join us for a discussion with fitness writers, physicians, and leaders of the city’s public health initiatives to explore the free and low-cost fitness resources that already exist in the city, and how best to take advantage of them. This program springs from our exhibition, The New York City Marathon: The Great Race.

    • Thomas W. Farley, Former Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene & Chief Executive Officer, The Public Good Projects
    • Adena Long, Assistant Commissioner, Public Programs, NYC Parks & Recreations
    • Nancy Easton, Co-Founder, Wellness in the Schools (WITS)
    • Anahad O’Connor, Reporter, New York Times

Runners’ Weekend: Yoga Workshop and Film Screening  February 28 at 2:30 PM

Yoga for Runners Workshop, 2:30 PM

Yoga has only relatively recently been recognized as an important supplement for runners to help them develop greater, flexibility, fitness, and mental focus. It can be used as part of a post-run stretch and cool down, as important cross-training for injury prevention, or to help unwind after a busy day. Join us for a well-rounded 45-minute sequence that includes key poses for the areas of the body that are most overused or prone to injury for runners presented by the Upper East Side’s own Five Pillars Yoga. Attendees must bring their own yoga mats.

Run for Your Life Film Screening, 4:00 PM

    (Rescheduled from Saturday, January 23)
Following the yoga workshop, join us for a screening of Run for Your Life, a documentary film chronicling the life of Fred Lebow, race director and founder of the five-borough New York City Marathon. The movie will be followed by a conversation with its Emmy Award winning director, Judd Ehrlich and George Hirsch, a co-founder of the New York City Marathon and Chairman of the Board of the New York Road Runners, about how Lebow’s tenacity and passion for running united a divided city and sparked a worldwide fitness boom. During the film, a light, healthy snack will be served!

These programs accompany our exhibition, The New York City Marathon: The Great Race.

  • Good Toy says Running, Creativity, and Cupid Go Together

CHRC’s Gear iusb_760x100.16907372_15mvShoppe is supplied by Good Toy Print Lab, a small silkscreen start-up in a rural garage in New Jersey.

Our proprietor, Stephanie and her boyfriend, Alex have been the designers and creators of CHRC gear since 2014. Much like their own Brooklyn Romance (Steph and Alex worked together at adjacent farm stands at Grand Army Plaza Farmer’s Market… she used to give him free bread to flirt with him), the relationship that CHRC has with Good Toy is a special one that feeds on mutual love of running and the creative spirit.

    image2

Good Toy started when some friends decided to turn their hobby around to make cash and escape the boredom of post-college lethargy.

And the name? Alex and his friends were drunk in a bar talking about Furbies with an Irishman. Thus the birth of “good toy”!

    It stuck.

This year Good Toy expanded to become a cross hybrid of a silkscreen studio, printing lab, and collaborative creative space for artists in their local community with plans to be a “full service” creative agency. Steph and Alex provide graphic design consultation, custom graphic and manual design for logos and marketing, & silkscreen printing for media and apparel.

They’ve expanded to start doing more artistic paper prints and wedding invitation suites, now working on starting up lessons, hosting classes for silkscreen workshops, and utilizing their studio for a gallery space to host events and other creative workshops.

When Alex and Stephanie met, she says “we image1clicked immediately as creative partners, and began collaborating on unique, original, quirky and bold hand-made prints.” Their creative process is special, not only due to their deep friendship and bond, but also because they work together on every design or product that Good Toy puts out; listening to Steely Dan and drinking craft beer in the studio all day to fuel their creativity.

Stephanie is a long-time member of CHRC, a runner that loves speed and hard work. The ‘re-birth’ of CHRC (c. 2014) and her relationship with Alex happened to coincide. As she describes it: “It was a happy accident of reciprocity- Good Toy needed to be revamped desperately, and CHRC needed a logo and some gear. CHRC was our very first ‘client’! The rest is in the gear shoppe!”

Learn more about Good Toy and their services: Email Goodtoyprintlab@gmail.com, or contact them directly via phone or Facebook message (Stephanie Butikis/Good Toy Print Lab).
