Make the City Your Gym February 22 at 6:30 pm

New York may be well known for its expansive parks, pedestrian lifestyle, and greenmarkets, but many residents also cope with food deserts, prohibitively expensive gym memberships, and limited access to well-maintained green space – as well as to quality healthcare. How can New York offer world-class health and wellness opportunities for all its citizens, not just the wealthiest? Join us for a discussion with fitness writers, physicians, and leaders of the city’s public health initiatives to explore the free and low-cost fitness resources that already exist in the city, and how best to take advantage of them. This program springs from our exhibition, The New York City Marathon: The Great Race.

Runners’ Weekend: Yoga Workshop and Film Screening  February 28 at 2:30 PM

Yoga for Runners Workshop, 2:30 PM

Yoga has only relatively recently been recognized as an important supplement for runners to help them develop greater, flexibility, fitness, and mental focus. It can be used as part of a post-run stretch and cool down, as important cross-training for injury prevention, or to help unwind after a busy day. Join us for a well-rounded 45-minute sequence that includes key poses for the areas of the body that are most overused or prone to injury for runners presented by the Upper East Side’s own Five Pillars Yoga. Attendees must bring their own yoga mats.

Run for Your Life Film Screening, 4:00 PM

    (Rescheduled from Saturday, January 23)
Following the yoga workshop, join us for a screening of Run for Your Life, a documentary film chronicling the life of Fred Lebow, race director and founder of the five-borough New York City Marathon. The movie will be followed by a conversation with its Emmy Award winning director, Judd Ehrlich and George Hirsch, a co-founder of the New York City Marathon and Chairman of the Board of the New York Road Runners, about how Lebow’s tenacity and passion for running united a divided city and sparked a worldwide fitness boom. During the film, a light, healthy snack will be served!

These programs accompany our exhibition, The New York City Marathon: The Great Race.
